Kiribati people warned of possible thunderstorms and strong winds

TARAWA, February 17, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —– The Office of the President has reminded the public to be cautious and alert at all times to minimize possible threats and impacts of severe wet season thunderstorms and strong winds.

Through its Disaster Unit, several reports of damage caused by strong winds at some of the outer islands, South Tarawa and Betio has been received. 

The damage was caused to homes, properties and maneaba’s.

The Office has reminded the public to protect themselves, families and their valuables from the impacts of high tides.

The Kiribati Meteorological Service has earlier published information on Wet Season weather, which is available on the bureau’s website….RK News

Kiribati Provident Fund to increase member’s reserve funds

TARAWA, February 17, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —— The Kiribati Provident Fund (KPF) has confirmed it will host a one-day consultation with members on February 21.

The Fund’s principal responsibility is to support members to lead to a worthy and exalted life.

The prime function of the consultation is to consult members on the strategies the office operates with, including pledging and increasing member’s reserved funds.

Training for using the Public Portal is also a vital part of the consultation process, through which customers and employers can access support from the office.

By collecting information from members and employers, the consultation is expected to contribute to the development of KPF services…..RK News

40 men and women enrolled in Bridging course at KIT

TARAWA, February 17, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —- Forty men and women have returned to the classroom as part of the Kiribati Institute of Technology’s Bridging Course for 2020.

The program is designed to draw mature age students back to the education system with a view to expanding individual skills and improving employment pathways.

The course is offered in English and focuses on using simple learning strategies of writing information, participating in simple spoken interaction, digital technology and numeracy skills.

Since 2017, more than 200 students have enrolled in the program. The current intake comprises twenty men and twenty women….RK News

Kiribati judoka leaves for training in Japan

TARAWA, February 17, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —— Kiribati Judo Federation female athlete, Kinaua Biribo left for Japan today to undertake intensive training before the Asian Oceania Judo Championship scheduled to take place in Mongolia, April this year.

KJF President Eddie Karoua told Radio Kiribati News despite the spread of corona virus in Japan Ms Biribo was willing to face the challenge for the love of her sport and country, Kiribati.

Mr Karoua said she will follow all preventative measures to avoid contact with the virus during her four month training period.

Biribo’s training is funded by Oceania Judo Union (OJU) and supported by KJF….RK News

KVFA kick-start two football leagues this year

TARAWA, February 17, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —– The Kiribati Veteran Football Association has started two championships this year.

KVFA Chairman Ateru Arim told Radio Kiribati News KVFA League 2020 started which will end in June provides a prize of $1000 and a trophy for a winner including a Golden Boot to the Top Scorer.

The other championship, the Red Horse Cup provides $400 for the winner and $200 for the first runer-up and ends in March….RK News
