Kiribati fishermen warned not to board foreign fishing vessels

TARAWA, February 15, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —– A ban on international travel has been lifted following negative tests on a suspected corona virus case in Fiji.
A report from the Ministry of Health says the public is required to cooperate as the office continues to work on keeping the virus out of Kiribati.
The office said procedures require incoming overseas vessels to anchor far-off the port. Passengers arriving aboard international are to be screened by an infra-red thermometer and must complete immigration forms with details about their health and travel history.
It warns locals fishing boat crews not to board vessels from overseas to avoid the spread of measles and corona virus….RK News

Electoral officers undergo training ahead of National Election

TARAWA, February 15, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —– The Electoral Officers have recently completed a training course from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) ahead the National election.
Officer in Charge of MoJ, Mrs Teebete England, told radio Kiribati news the training course focused on a review of the new additions to National By-Election Laws. They were also taught how to fill in forms for issuing of ID cards at their respective islands.
Mrs. England also said electoral officers in the Phoenix group were the last to attend such training courses.
The Banaba electoral officer has yet to begin training as a lack of transport was the main issue to visiting the Island. The Banaba election officer will receive training ahead the Election….RK News

Kiribati Government provides free transportation to students

TARAWA, February 15, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —— The Government of Kiribati will this week start providing free student transportation to and from schools on South Tarawa and Betio.
Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Bwakura Metutera Timeon, says a large capacity school bus will start its route at 7am from Tanaea and Temaiku to Betio and then reverse its route back to Santa Maria College in Bikenibeu.
After school, the bus will start picking up primary school students at 1:30pm and take them home to Betio to Tanaea and back to Betio.
Ms Timeon said the school bus service would continue until the arrival of several large school buses which are expected before end of February….RK News

MIA visits Maiana to promote cultural values and practices

TARAWA, February 15, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —— A team from the Culture and Museum Division (CMD) under the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have visited Maiana Island for promoting the cultural values and practices to the islanders as part of enhancing their food security against the impact of climate change.
The purpose of the trip is to continue the work on planting of the 5 Kiribati native food crops which are resilient to drought, such as coconut, breadfruit, pandanus, fig trees and giant swamp taro.
The team also collected traditional knowledge and skills that build the resilience of the people against climate change.
The activities were all documented through the video.
They will also be published in books for teaching materials for Kiribati people.
The purpose for doing this is that people can adapt to ways that will enhance their resilient against climate change.
The activity was supported by the Least Developed Countries Fund Project, funded by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Development Programme and implemented by the Environment and Conservation Division of MELAD….RK News

Nine teams registered for veteran’s football competitions

TARAWA, February 15, 2020 (RADIO KIRIBATI) —– The Kiribati Veteran Football Association has called on men who have reached the age of 30 to register and take part in its activities for the benefit of their health.
KVFA Chairman Ateru Arim told Radio Kiribati News since the start in 2016 till date nine teams have registered with KVFA, comprising Oreaba, Vigorous 20, Lyke it, Punjas, KOIL, ATHKL, Outbreak, Amerikan Temakin and KFL.
Mr Arim said KVFA was established in an effort to help reduce the risks of non-communicable diseases to this age group.
He said KVFA is currently targeting the older age group of 40 plus with a new routine scheduled to take place on Fridays, starting from next week….RK News
